‘Suvarna Parva’- Festival of Kathak, the biggest commemoration of Kathak, took place in Ahmedabad, during the second week of December 2015. It was the grand celebration of the fifty years of successful endeavors of Kumudini Lakhia’s (fondly called Kumiben) journey in Kathak and glorifying Kadamb – Centre of Dance.
The celebration was the most appropriate prismatic presentation on the occasion of the fifty years of existence of the major Kathak centre in India. The glistening vigorous performances with ample blend of grace in every recital delivered, Suvarna Parva was a phenomenal gala.
Kumudini Lakhia, has been the apostle of Kathak dance, who has earned the repute of being the most accomplished female Kathak exponents in the history so far. She is still acclaimed for her solo performances and several excellent shringara rasa duets such as Malti Madhav and Kumar Sambhav with the Kathak legend, Padma Vibhushan Birju Maharaj. She is credited with turning Kathak into choreographic works, contemporary concepts works, themes and narratives using scientifically modern, for her productions. In a career spanning 60 years of time, no other Indian classical dancer has created the number of compositions based on classical dance as those done by Kumudini Lakhia. She was one of the first amongst the Kathak dancers to visualize this particular dance style in a contemporary content. It was the biggest pleasure for India Heritage Desk to be a part of an occasion of this magnitude and substance.
