This walk will start from Chawri Bazaar Metro Station and explore the promenade which housed the kothis of the various tawaifs. We will stop at Mubarak Begum’s Masjid and discuss Sir Ochterlony, the British Resident, Mubarak Begum and the tradition of Nautch. As we walk we will discuss the various interesting personalities of the time who have been associated with the tradition of Nautch – like Mohammad Shah Rangila and Begum Samru, for instance. We will touch upon their fall from grace with the coming of the anti-Nautch movement, and discuss their later forays into new media such as radio. The walk ends at Ghalib’s Haveli, where we will recreate the world of the tawaifs through images, songs and photographs.

Musafir Heritage Walks began as a student initiative, to raise awareness about Delhi’s lesser-known history through the popular medium of heritage walks. The walks are conducted by students studying history at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, who are aware of both the popular misconceptions about history and historical figures, and the need to counter them with a balanced and factual narrative. Our walk leaders – Soumya Sahai and Shivani Kasumra – employ their well-honed skills to tell us about the extensive research they have done for each walk. Being students ourselves, we are able to relate to and connect with our student audience. History is usually taught in such a dry manner in classrooms, and we want to bring it to life, for a change, using varied media, such as images, maps, photographs, videos and songs. In doing so, we hope to create a whole new generation of history enthusiasts.
